Sales of direct-to-home digital satellite systems in 1998 have reached record-breaking levels after a weak 1997. Manufacturers have had to postpone the launch of new models in order to meet the surging demand for direct-to-home digital satellite devices. Also, Uniden, Panasonic, Toshiba and other companies that have been aggressive in the DBS market have silently retreated. Panasonic, on the other hand, may initiate a comeback, launching either an EchoStar or PrimeStar product, contingent on the result of PrimeStar's court battle with the US Department of Justice.

Statistics show that differences in the way consumer electronics retailers handle their business are reflected in their total rate of return to shareholders. Figures compiled for 60 consumer electronics companies over a 10-yr period reveal that Wal-mart and Best Buy are the leaders in the field while losers include K-mart, Toys-R-Us and Service Merchandise. Wal- Mart's track record is attributable to everyday low prices, a friendly environment and the ready availability of merchandise on shelves.

A market survey conducted by eBrain Market Research revealed that only 52% of all adult consumers are aware of flat-screen, plasma or wall television (TV), 6% of which has a 'very good' understanding of what flat-screen TV is. On a brighter note, 31% of the consumers who have awareness are most likely to purchase this type of television set, which translates to potential sales of about 15 million units.
