Retail wheeling in the electric power distribution industry is inevitable if utilities are to meet the service and price needs of customers. The practice is simply an aspect of advanced competition. Switching and metering technology is still not capable of handling all conditions resulting from retail wheeling.

Florida Power & Light Co developed a Fast Action Load Shedding program that detects and protects power lines from electrical surges and instability. The program can be overridden by an engineer in case of emergency.
