Pioneer opens R&D center for digital technologies

Article Abstract:

Pioneer North America Inc on Jul 5, 2000 opened Pioneer Research Center USA Inc (PRA), its newest research and development unit located in San Jose, CA. Headed by Pres and CEO Takashi Sakakibara, the R&D office will develop digital technologies for the audio-video market in the country. In addition, PRA will allow Pioneer to work on the latest developments in digital network standards-setting and related components. Initially, the center will focus on developing software that is compatible with digital television and digital cable TV.

DVDs do well in Europe; sales may top 4 million units

Article Abstract:

The European Platform for Optical Discs forecasts that sales of DVD players in Europe in 2000 could total 4 million units, as consumers in the region begin to take interest in the products. In 1999, volume shipments of DVD players increased 1.2 million units, compared with the shipments of only 250,000 units in the previous year. In year 2000, Japanese and European DVD player makers are targeting the German market with 55 brands and 143 models.
