New techniques improve field analysis of wood-pole condition

Article Abstract:

Utility engineers at Nyseg and Hydro-Quebec are searching for new and improved methods of wood-pole evaluation. Nyseg developed Pole Calc, a software that calculates the remaining life of wood-poles while Quebec is probing the use of x-rays and electrical resistance in measurement methods.

Engineers who want their transmission lines provided with optimal protection against lightning may use groundbed electrodes. These devices significantly reduce ground resistance of wirings thereby limiting their vulnerability to lightning attacks even in sites built with solid rock.

Article Abstract:

Electric utilities can cut the costs of transmission and distribution systems by installing auto-transformers. The design of auto-transformers result in smaller sizes and lower materials costs and improved efficiency resulting in reduced power losses.
