United Power Assn. has automated its electric power distribution using various products from different vendors. The Utility Communication Architecture designed by Electric Power Research Institute was the main ingredient which enabled the interlinking of different equipment.

The electric industry is experiencing a surge in the number of available field equipment for remote operation. These equipment, which include capacitor banks, voltage regulators, reclosers, meters and switches, are believed to be the precursors of downline automation.

A flow-chart and accompanying text provide understanding of a distributed automation computer system used by electric utility companies. The system provides better service reliability and economic benefits in addition to better monitoring of power distribution.
