Mexico's move to court foreign investment has forced Petroleos de Mexico to abandon its monopoly on natural gas. Pemex may be able to continue managing a 6,200-mile gas pipeline system, while permitting private firms to expand it, and foreign rivals to sell natural gas to the country.
