Matsushita revs up battery production in Brazil

Matsushita Battery Industrial Company Ltd intends to boost the production of alkaline batteries from its manufacturing facilities in Brazil. The company, which has four battery making plants in the country, plans to invest 2 billion yen in building and equipping a plant at its Panasonic Do Brasil Ltda unit's Battery Div. The facility, which will produce 5 million alkaline batteries every month, is expected to help immensely in Matsushita's goal of capturing a 25% share of the world's dry cell market estimated at 28 billion units.

Demand for alkaline batteries has increased by 12% in fiscal year 2000, totalling 1.5 billion units. Rising demand is fueled by users of equipment that requires strong currents. Meanwhile, demand for all varieties of rechargeable or secondary batteries continues to grow. This is attributed to the rising number of products that use portable power supplies and to the use of rechargeable batteries for emergencies or backup purposes.
