Managers of older electric power plants reveal how they cut costs in maintaining the plants. Most use a two-pronged approach: statistical analysis of all the plants' production, and evaluation of an individual plant's engineering and operation. Other management techniques are discussed.

Portland General Electric Co now uses a turnkey approach to complete its electric power transmission and distribution projects. By contracting out the substation design and construction process, the utility is able to learn new and advanced concepts in project management.
