Fiber-optic technologies are expected to dramatically affect the electric power industry. An explanation of fiber optic principles is followed by a discussion of utilities' applications, including interstation communications, intrastation control circuits, transmission circuit grounding wire, and measurement of voltage, current, temperature, and other variables.

What's past is prologue

In the forty years ending in 1992, the electric power distribution industry has seen the passing of many things, such as inexpensive, environmentally safe nuclear energy. In the future, the industry will see new ideas take shape, such as increasing electrification to enhance productivity and convenience.

Yankee raises a red flag

Article Abstract:

The Yankee Atomic Electric Co.'s plant shut down was based on the fact that alternative and less expensive sources of electricity are available. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission plans to enforce stricter requirements for reactor assembly in the future.
