Article Abstract:
The Japan Recording Media Industries Assn (JRMIA) reported that the media products that have the most potential for growth in 1999 include recordable CDs and Mini Digital Videocassettes. Among the significant forecasts of the JRMIA are that audiotape production in Japan will fall by 10% in 1999 while recordable CD production will increase to 42% to 320 million units. The JRMIA also predicts that more advanced-performance products will be introduced and that the market for the storage of still and moving pictures on 3.5-in magneto-optical discs, recordable CDs and large-capacity floppy discs will continue to grow.

Small, thin memory cards are now widely employed as memory media in digital cameras as well as in portable audio players for containing MP3 data or other compressed audio files. Advancement in technology has led to higher capacities for these cards. As appliances using the cards became smaller, equipment makers realized that the cards were too large and were obstructing efforts to make appliances smaller. In response, the industry developed smaller cards, such as CompactFlash cards, Smart Media cards, MultiMedia Cards, Memory Sticks and Secure Digital Memory Cards.

The demand for recordable CDs (CD-Rs) have risen as these disks are increasingly being used as CD-ROMs. The most important characteristic of CD-Rs are their compatibility with CD-ROM drives, which are standard equipment on microcomputers. CD-Rs are also non-erasable nor rewritable, preventing the tampering of data. This particular feature make CD-Rs well- suited for the storage of public records and legal documents.
