Japanese manufacturers of MiniDisc (MD) players enjoyed robust sales in the domestic portable audio market in 1998. Sales of portable MD players surpassed sales of headphone stereo systems and portable compact disc players during the year. From Jan to Nov 1998, shipments of portable MD players in Japan totaled 1.828 million units, up 48.7% from the same period the previous year. In 1999, sales of MD players are expected to surge, with design and end-of-use features being important competitive variables.

Japan's shipments of MiniDisc (MD) players in the first six months of 1999 reached 1.16 million, a 46% increase from the first half of 1998. The increase in the MD market was attributed to the introduction of more sophisticated models, playing times, proliferation of the MD format, enhancement in ease of operation and low power consumption. Japan's demand for MDs could increase to over three million in 1999, according to analysts.

Portable MiniDisc player shipments in Japan may have reached 3 million units in 2000. The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Assn reported shipments of 2,439,000 units from Jan through Nov 2000, a 10.4% increase from the same period of 1999. If shipments in Dec 2000, exceeded sales of Dec 1999, by 10% or more, shipments for the year will be approximately 3 million. Shipments in Dec 1999 reached 450,000 units.
