Alpine steers car audio production abroad

Alpine Electronics Inc intends to shift 80% of its car audio equipment output to facilities outside Japan. The move, which is in line with the company's made-in-market strategy, is also aimed at creating a corporate structure that will be less vulnerable to currency fluctuations. Alpine, which reported sales of 61 billion yen for the first half of FY1999, has already completed a plant in Hungary and is making plans to increase production at its facility in Dalian, China.

Makers increasingly assign digital A/V to bases abroad

The need to reduce costs has resulted in a number of Japanese DVD players and MiniDisc manufacturers shifting their production to facilities outside Japan. The trend, which is attributed to strong competition within the sector, is expected to intensify further as DVD enters the US market. The move by the DVD makers is made in order to take advantage of the relatively lower labor cost in the Southeast Asian countries and China.

Sony aims to double MD audio sales abroad

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp launched six portable audio disc players in 1998 aimed at international markets. The products included playback-only and recording and playback models. Portable minidisc (MD) players made up 40% of the total MD audio equipment line, while recording and playback models accounted for 80% of portable MD players. The best recording and playback model is the MZ-R50, which features jog dial and remote control functions.
