Alpine Electronics of America Inc is banking on its DVD navigation system, a product that it introduced in Jul 1999, to improve its share of the car audio market. The company, which expressed surprise at the warm acceptance of the market for the high-end product, reports a better acceptance for the DVD devices compared to their CD-ROM counterparts. Alpine's strategy is based on the perception that audio-video equipment will be initially more acceptable to US consumers.

Sony cultivates special car audio family to gain youth market

Sony Corp will begin an extensive promotional campaign in the US aimed at capturing lost market share in the automobile audio equipment sector. The campaign, which will begin in spring 2000, will include the cultivation of a powerful line of head units that are expected to appeal to the youth market. Sony's Xplod line of speakers and amplifiers, which proved to be popular with consumers born after 1976, will be expanded to include the head units.
