Alpine Electronics Inc plans to increase the production of consumer-use car audio systems at its overseas manufacturing facilities, particularly in Dalian, China. The company, which will continue producing OEM-brand car audio systems in Japan, is reorganizing its global production of consumer- use car audio equipment to take advantage of lower manufacturing costs at plants outside of Japan. Under the program, overseas production will be increased from 60% in FY1999 to 80% in FY2001.

Aiwa expects a 70% increase in the sales of its car audio products in 1999 after selling one million units of CD receivers, CD changers and cassette players in 1998. The company has stepped up marketing activities for its expanded car audio lineup after repeatedly entering and withdrawing from the business on a limited scale. Aiwa is manufacturing all of its products through in-house production to cut costs, raise quality and improve delivery schedules.

Matsushita Communication Industrial Company Ltd of Japan is stepping up production and marketing efforts for its car audio in Europe, with the goal of selling 4 million units in 1999. The company has already launched it Day and Night series in Europe in 1999 and hopes to sell 1 million units by the end of the year. It has also built another factory in Germany to double production capacity.
