Sony Corp, Japan, has introduced a four-legged canine robot called Aibo to the Japanese and US markets in limited quantities. The company is monitoring consumer response to the robot dog, more formally known as ERS- 110, because it hopes to establish a market for robot entertainment. Aibo, which also works with an ERF-510 Aibo Performer Kit motion editor, acts in response to external stimuli and according to its own temperament.

Statistics from the Semiconductor Equipment Assn of Japan show that sales of Japanese-made liquid crystal display (LCD) panel manufacturing equipment reached 147.3 trillion yen in fiscal year 1999, up by 98.5% compared to 1998 levels. Sales growth is expected to continue to 2000 until 2002. With the expansion of the LCD market, manufacturers are enhacing their systems for accelerated production.
