Ishida Co Ltd of Kyoto, Japan, is a leading developer and supplier of weighing systems. The company controls 80%-90% of the domestic market for industrial-use weighing systems and 60%-70% of the overseas market. Ishida is projecting total sales of 39 billion yen for FY99, after recording sales of 36.3 billion yen in FY98. The company is projecting further growth with increased orders from the local distribution industry, in which it commands a 40% market share, and a boost in exports, which accounts for 30% of its total sales.

Eleven railway companies in Japan's Kanto area are planning to enter the communications business. Since these companies have already laid long lines of optical fiber cables alongside train routes for railway safety systems, it would be very cost-effective to use these optical fibers for general-purpose data communications as well. Some are considering to rent the lines to foreign communications firms who want to enter Japan.

Hitachi Metals Ltd will nearly double the production of rare-earth magnets at its plant in Kumagaya, Japan, due to the use of wet molding system. The wet molding system provides better yield, costs and product quality than dry molding. It is being used at the Kumgaya facility to process 4 tons of rare-earth magnets monthly. Plant output is expected to reach 7 tons monthly by spring of 1999.
