Major appliance business is selling a lot of units but the dollar margins are dropping. There is an almost-unanimous agreement among independent, regional and national appliance retailers that innovation will provide the solution to push up profits from flat. The industry is enjoying strong sales for innovations such as Thermadors, Sub-Zeros, Vikings and Maytag's Neptune washing machine. Retailers can get ticket prices up with innovations because consumers are willing to spend more money on products that excite them.

Prototype appliances with innovative features, unconventional shapes and bold colors were featured at the 1999 Domotechnica exhibition in Cologne, Germany. Among the innovative products are Daewoo's Magic Mirror top-mount refrigerator, GE Appliances' bubble-shaped washer, Zanussi's vibrant yellow washing machines and Bosch's 50's stylre refrigerator. The more mainstream products included Bosch's SIWAMAT XL washer, Amana's blue top-mount refrigerator and Asko's new generation washer/dryer.

Demand for mobile video equipment significantly rose in 1999 caused by the emergence of the so called 'mom and dad' consumers who have taken a liking for in-car entertainment. Manufacturers of mobile digital video disc (DVD) players such as Panasonic and Sharp reported increased sales of their respective mobile video products. They expect sales to further increase in 2000.
