Yamaha Corp launched the MDX-793 full-sized minidisc (MD) recorder on a global scale in Jun 1998. The product was developed with an aim to approximate the sound quality offered by the deluxe CDX-993 CD player. Yamaha made this possible by integrating a 24-bit digital signal processor with adaptive transform acoustic coding IC, Super Bit Allocation technology and a 20-bit digital-analog converter into the MDX-793 model.

Sony Electronics Inc made its entry into the US digital TV market by introducing in Oct 1998 its 34-in, 16:9 wide-screen HDTV featuring Sony's proprietary FD Trinitron flat-screen picture tube. The HDTV set, which displays HDTV signals in resolutions with 1,080 lines, can decode every existing digital TV format approved for use in the US by the Advanced Television Standard Committee.

The new Panasonic DMR - E700BD is a digital versatile disc (DVD) recorder that supports single sided, double layer Blu - ray disc with a maximum capacity of 50 gigabyte of storage. The DVD recorder offers 4.5 hours of digital high definition programming of 63 hours of analog programming and the built in tuners capture specified terrestrial and satellite broadcast signals.
