Japanese manufacturer Fuji Photo film Co Ltd is marketing an innovative digital still camera model incorporating a charge coupled device with 2.3 million pixels. Its FinePix 2900Z digital still camera can capture fine- definition images comparable to those of film-based cameras, and comes with a standard 3X optical zoom lens. The product's exterior design resembles that of a single-lens reflex camera. It permits full manual recording as well as white balance settings in up to seven positions, and accommodates exposures of up to three seconds.

The total shipment of digital cameras to markets within and outside of Japan is estimated to have reached about 65 billion yen in 1999, an increase of almost 30% compared to figures reported in 1998. The superb performance of the product is attributed to the adoption of sophisticated and advanced features in the cameras. These include the incorporation of CCDs that feature over 2 million pixels and lenses that offer 3x zoom capabilities.

Manufacturers of digital cameras have enjoyed increased sales with the continued innovations of their products. In 1999, 5.09 million units were sold worldwide, in which digital cameras with two million or more pixel CCDs were the most sought after. In spring 2000, manufacturers have unveiled digital cameras with three million or more pixel CCDs and feature improvements in response, sensitivity, battery life and operability.
