Article Abstract:

An analysis of the reasons behind the relative success of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) in the recent European elections. It is argued that the reason UKIP was so successful was that all of the other parties failed to campaign on the issue of Europe, leaving UKIP as the only story for the media to cover, thereby enabling UKIP to attract more votes than they otherwise would have.

...a gambling man, discount the youth vote

Article Abstract:

The youth vote in the UK is not really targeted by the main political parties for the simple reason that so few people in the 18-24 age bracket bother to vote. If those within that age group want the political parties to take them more seriously then they need to turn out in the 2005 general election, otherwise the parties will continue to ignore the issues that concern this group.

Politics is just a bit on the side

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the BBC's coverage of the campaigns being waged by the various political parties in the UK ahead of the general election. It is argued that while the use of gimmicks can help engage viewers in the process, some of the methods the BBC have used to keep viewers interested have gone too far and fail to effectively illuminate the issues under discussion.
