The stress dissident

Article Abstract:

Nurse Yvonne McEwen, appointed project director of the UK's first higher education initiative in trauma management in Jan. 1997, has angered many in the counselling world with her views. Gordon Turnbull, who organised the debriefing of the Beirut hostages in 1991, argues that McEwen's views can be extremely damaging to trauma victims and to those who work with them. McEwen maintains that disaster victims want practical assistance rather than a talking cure from professional counsellors. Fife College of Further and Higher Education is reviewing the trauma management initiative in Nov. 1997.

Probe into why doctors drop out

Article Abstract:

A study will be carried out by the British Medical Association (BMA) of 500 medical students to ascertain why almost 25% leave the profession three years following completion of their studies. One possible explanation is that women physicians leave to have children, but it is not yet known whether women leave disproportionately more than men. Male physicians may also be less willing to accept long hours and other demands of the profession than they were previously.
