Philip Altbach, professor of higher education at Boston College, Massachusetts, suggests that the lower-rung colleges that covet the same mass market as the for profit institutions face the greatest threat but, he contends, the for-profits institutions are really "pseudo-universities" that do a good job in niche markets catering for intellectually narrow interests, but that a real university is a place of inquiry where a range of degrees is offered, teaching students to ask questions.
