Article Abstract:
Some observers feel that young people entering higher education should always have the opportunity of attending an institution which carries out research. They feel that this would improve the quality of learning which they receive. The ability to conduct research, if combined with teaching ability, would be the ideal combination for a university lecturer. It is argued that constant research needs to be combined with practical work to keep the thinking behind the project creative.

Academic audits are scheduled to start in the UK in the next couple of years. They are designed to assess the institution's quality assurance , by looking at a variety of factors e.g. course design, staff training and the views of external examiners and employers. The Dutch method is to sample a subject by visiting each institution where it is taught, rather than an institution as a whole.
