The haves and have nots

Article Abstract:

Over 20% of the UK population has an income below the European Union poverty line in the 1990s, compared with 9% in 1979. The gap between poor and rich has widened more dramatically in the UK than elsewhere in Europe, although the income inequality growth rate seems to have plateaued. Income inequality potentially perpetuates greater future inequalities, with wealthier parents having better opportunities to invest in their children's education, while low parental income can lead to exclusion in the employment market for future generations.

Article Abstract:

Sociology has a strong link with politics since social issues are also political concerns. There has been a move away from class analysis in order to understand new types of phenomena such as the animal welfare movement, which are not class-based. Sociologists tend to be more cautious about causality than economists, who tend to assume a higher degree of rationality than is apparent. A new trend toward emphasising ethics has come from sociology.

A prefabricated brave new world

Article Abstract:

Changes in UK society have been prompted by war, but the 1914-1918 war perhaps caused more change than the 1939-1945 war. The first war had led to greater state involvement in the economy and greater representation for the working class. Land was redistributed to tenant farmers after 1918. Nationalization did not bring great changes after 1945. The welfare state grew from previous recommendations which have roots in earlier decades.
