The daily battle for justice

Article Abstract:

The University of Natal in Durban, South Africa, has many policies and procedures to ensure that it is truly the equal opportunity, affirmative action institution it declares itself to be, yet it has been accused of being racist. The recent election campaign in South Africa saw one political party claim that a student with impressive matriculation results had been denied a place at the University of Natal simply because she was Indian. However the student was applying for entry to a faculty where competition for places is strong and where there is a very strong need for affirmative action.

Article Abstract:

Universities must endeavour to become more diverse to ensure that access is equal for all. Access to education is a crucial factor for black South Africans, in order that they may find employment and provide support their families. It has been suggested that student riots in South Africa are linked with the need for young people to fulfill their social obligations to their families. Universities should increase access and become more diverse in order to challenge the prevailing ideologies and stereotypes. Technology may cause learning to become more individualistic.

Article Abstract:

Universities need to look at their role in teaching students about moral responsibility, in view of the gap between the wealthy and the poor. According to the United Nations Development Program, despite the development of technology and communications, the gap has grown since 1981. Educational establishments will need to focus on ethics and make students aware of choices of career and the morality of certain jobs. Degree courses could well include community work, to make students aware of social problems.
