Article Abstract:
The Universities Superannuation Scheme and the scheme run by the Teachers Pensions Agency could choose to contract back into the state earnings related pensions scheme (SERPS) under new arrangements that need to be decided in 1997. However the two schemes will still be able to contract out of SERPS under new Government rules since they easily satisfy the condition that they provide broadly comparable benefits to a model scheme. Academics should bear in mind that a reasonable occupational scheme to which an employer makes a cash contribution will always be preferable to a state pension.
