Admissions staff at universities in the UK have been struggling to deal with a surge in demand caused by student fears that courses in the most popular subjects could soon be filled. Admissions officers noted that the number of calls to clearing hotlines had rocketed from last year, while the number of people applying for places on many courses had increased by over 100% from 2004.

The initiative is headed by Aneez Esmail, professor of general practice and associate vice-president for equality and diversity at Manchester.
