A personal account of making the leap from writing a PhD thesis to writing an award-winning academic book and advice on how to make the same sort of transition. Tips include not trying to do too much with the first book; once published, using the first book as a calling card; contemplating making work accessible to a wider audience; and not being afraid to shop work around different publishers in search of the best deal.
