Article Abstract:
UK biological and biotechnological research is increasingly carried out through short-term contracts which affects the career prospects of such researchers. The number of contract researchers has risen in the 15 years to 1995 but there has been no increase in the number of long-term posts in universities, and demand for researchers with PhDs has not risen in the private sector. This creates a career bottleneck for researchers and makes it difficult to attract top quality researchers.

Article Abstract:
The UK government want to see science-industry links improved as the backbone of their science and technology policy. Some observers feel that given the situation in the UK economy it is unwise to spend large sums on astronomy or physics. There will be pressure on the government to give more support to scientists engaged in research, both financially and in terms of resources. Improved co-operation between science and industry is proposed but extra funding will not be available.
