Neil Kinnock will be appointed president of University of Wales, Cardiff, where he was once a student. He regrets not having studied harder, though his political career began when he was a student at Cardiff. Kinnock was leader of the United Kingdom Labor party for nine years and then joined the European Commission. He regrets not having reformed the Labor party more rapidly. His Welsh identity is important to him and he aims to promote Cardiff in a positive way.

A group has been inaugurated to help government employees who wish to alert the outside world to their concerns about their particular workplace or institution. Some observers are calling for changes in procedures to eliminate unfair treatment.

Jorge Castaneda, a Mexican academic and economist, says that Latin American society will become increasingly fragmented and unequal if neo-liberal solutions to its economic problems continue. Castaneda, who admits he is a frustrated politician, believes the answer is to redistribute income by taxing the middle class and redistributing their wealth to the poor.
