Rabbinical dynamo has patients in mind

Article Abstract:

Medical education in the UK must be more interdisciplinary, according to rabbi Julia Neuberger, chief executive of the King's Fund, the leading health think-tank in the UK. Medical professionals now work in the community in teams, and it is therefore not logical to educate them completely separately. It is also necessary for medical educators to consider the way the whole system informs the public, and medical schools must have a much firmer grounding in the community. She is strongly opposed to the overemphasis on research as a result of the research assessment exercise.

The big bang in biology

Article Abstract:

The Hyman Genome Project is a global project involving scientists from around the world. The project's aim is to identify the order of human genes and their related markers. This should be achieved by the beginning of the next century. Different projects are being conducted simultaneously. Scientists have sequenced a worm and they are doing the same with fruit flies. Human sequencing will be achieved by the year 2004 and scientists can use this data to continue research into inherited genetic diseases and others, such as asthma, which are thought to be linked to genes.

Harried by the mob

Article Abstract:

The world population is expected to reach over 11 billion by the year 2050, and is increasing more rapidly as time goes on. Eventually the world's economy will be threatened by the huge numbers of people living in large cities which create enormous pollution. Most of the increase is seen in the third world, although a reduction in the number of people living in absolute poverty has been noted. Environmental issues such as global warming are a considerable threat on the future of mankind.
