Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the contention that greater collaboration between the University of Ulster and Queen's University Belfast is one benefit of devolution for universities in Northern Ireland are examined. It is argued that devolution has given the two universities, which to a large extent constitute the research base in Northern Ireland, greater opportunities to influence policy locally, while also making them more politically accountable.

An analysis of the events which led up to the decision by Gerry McKenna to step down from his position as vice-chancellor of Ulster University. McKenna had been on sick leave since 24 November 2004, two days after university's council launched an investigation into allegations about McKenna's conduct.

Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University (UU) plan a three-day festival for students and the local community to celebrate St Patrick's Day on 17 March to try to avoid problems. The move comes after rowdiness and arrests in 2005.
