The number of graduates in the Republic of Cyprus, per head of population, is one of the best in the world. Education has always been important to Greek Cypriot society. The Turkish administration ensure their is little cooperation between the divided sections of the island. The University of Cyprus, in Nicosia, is the only higher educational establishment recognized by the government despite the presence of several colleges. United States Presidential Emissary to Cyprus Richard Holbrooke had warned he would leave the talks if the Greek and Turkish Cypriots would not negotiate.

There are a number factors that united Cyprus, despite the political divisions that the island has experienced. Concern for higher education is one such factor. The University of Cyprus was seen as representing a key point within the Mediterranean, in 1992, and it lies where three continents meet. The university uses Greek. The Eastern Mediterranean University is the biggest institution within the north of Cyprus, and instruction is in English. Higher education plays a major role in the economy of Northern Cyprus.

Changes are taking place within the island of Cyprus' higher education system. The one university is expanding and another private university is due to open, but this is causing controversy and a binary system may result.
