Namibia became independent of South Africa in 1990, and the official language is now English rather than Afrikaans. Teachers have been helped over the transition by a distance learning package to help them learn English. It was a joint programme between Namibia and the UK, and 97% of listeners have said it was helpful. More than 60% of South African blacks are estimated to be illiterate. The Namibian programme, broadcast on radio and now available on tape, gives pupils and tutors a chance to meet.
