Article Abstract:
The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) has launched a drive for a Europe-wide citation index, reigniting fears among academics that any such list would be unfairly used in the next RAE. The AHRC has held a meeting with learned societies and subject associations to persuade them to respond to a consultation on a league table of journals which members of the European Science Foundation have drawn up.

An overview of the different ways in which academics in the United States have reacted to restrictions imposed on them since the terrorist attacks of 2001. The main problem many academics are facing is how to decide what parts of their work can be safely distributed publicly and which parts should be kept "classified" for fear that they could be of help to terrorists.

Australia's government is hoping that its new research quality framework will be a global pioneer in measurement of research impact. The framework will be used to allocate funding using a model which links funding to the past performance of researchers.
