Invisible borders around the elite

Article Abstract:

Speaker after speaker at a conference to consider universities in the 21st century held in Singapore in Aug. 1996, pointed out that equal access to higher education remains a distant dream. Technologies such as the Internet, digital libraries and satellites have undoubtedly enabled many more people to gain access to higher education. India has at least seven open universities, each with over 50,000 students. However, as University of Natal vice-chancellor Brenda Gourley pointed out, information technology is of no use to the 60% of South Africans who have no electricity.

IT cannot replace eye-to-eye

Article Abstract:

The use of information technology (IT) could plausibly lead to widespread job losses in the higher education sector. Face-to-face contact between Open University lecturers and distance learning students has been eroded by telecommunications. Several colleges and universities aim to cut staff levels during 1997-2000 because of IT use, even though reports suggest traditional resources such as staff may not be replaceable with technology.

A HAL of a way to take the chip off Marvin's cold shoulder

Article Abstract:

Computer Scientist and Author Roz Picard is unsure if computers should be given emotions but feels they should be aware of human emotions. Picard has been working with her students in the MIT Media Lab on human and computer interaction. They are developing computers which can identify facial expressions. Picard points out people do not interact with computers without emotion. Picard has a background in electric engineering.
