Article Abstract:

The South African National Commission for Higher Education aims to develop a coherent approach to higher education, and one which promotes equality and which can be funded. Resources available for education are diminishing, while demand is increasing. The commission aims to develop a plan to be implemented in South Africa, which will balance gender, race and other considerations. The commission should issue a report between 18 months and two years from early 1995.

A clash of two cultures

Article Abstract:

Racial integration in South African universities appears more difficult since ties between white radicals and black activists have loosened. Some students argue that standards in universities relate to a eurocentric view of ideas, and that standards should be afrocentric. Affirmative action has been criticised for only allowing richer black students to attend university. Others are afraid of the impact on white students who may not be able to enter university.

Article Abstract:

South African universities aim to correct social imbalances through affirmative action programs and transformation structures. This involves an ongoing process including the way higher education is governed. There are shortages of staff and equipment in black universities, and blacks account for a small proportion of university professors. Some universities are beginning to change this through appointing black professors in addition to more women professors.
