The UK Joint Academic network (Janet) has made database services available for academic users. The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) is expanding the number of services by 100% and Edinburgh University, Scotland has become a new data center. Organizing Medical Networked Information (Omni) provides data on health and medical issues. A database for university research is being set up at Manchester University, England. The UK appears to be able to design and set up a national plan for such services.

Article Abstract:

Museums are undergoing a change in their role with the development of links through the Internet between work stations and museums. Museums are making services online such as collection databases and multimedia exhibitions. Most museums have yet to explore the potential available from new technology. Some 35 million people have access to the Internet and this figure is increasing by 100% annually. Universities have developed good network links and museums could follow.

St Andrews to get IT facelift

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning technological improvement plans at St Andrews University in Scotland are discussed. Particular attention is given to the creation of a new position, that of learning technologist, whose duty is to assess the role of information technology in learning processes.
