Researchers have concluded that at most, an extra GBP26 million is needed by the Welsh higher education sector to place on on a level funding platform with the English sector. There had been fears that Welsh academics were coping with much lower funding levels than colleagues at English universities.

Issues concerning the attitude of the Labour government of the United Kingdom toward accusations of underfunding in the higher education sector are discussed. It is emphasized that the British Vice Chancellor refused to support one of the eight options proposed for funding higher education.
