Frontline states look for brains trust

Article Abstract:

Countries surrounding South Africa are developing their own higher education systems and many of these countries are also undergoing a transition to democracy. These countries are concerned that a brain drain could result from universities in South Africa having better funding. Some professors have already left Zambia and Tanzania for South Africa. Networks linking universities in different countries are being set up and are gradually replacing training in eastern Europe which Mozambique previously used.

Dons, divas and ruff types

Article Abstract:

Opera is part of state culture in France and has been performed there for 300 years. The Palais Garnier is exhibiting costumes in a display which has involved academic research of the history of opera. Martine Kahane is the opera's cultural director who has selected costumes to be displayed. The exhibition has been designed by Alain Germain, stage director. Germain has taught at US universities and argues for stronger links between the academic world and the performing arts.

Top French lab feels the squeeze

Article Abstract:

The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) of France, a public research organisation, claims that rumours of a radical restructuring are unfounded. The CNRS management claims that any managerial changes will not affect the laboratories. CNRS researchers have seen budgets reduced, and new accounting methods have realigned project authorisations and payments.
