French PM moves to promote innovation

France is seeking to promote high technology and innovation and academics are to become involved in setting up new businesses, according to French prime minister, Lionel Jospin. This follows a report which criticized lack of communication between business and researchers. Priority areas include electronics, biotechnology and information technology. State intervention is justified due to the benefit to society as a whole from these activities. Tax changes may also help start-up companies.
