Fraud booms worldwide

Article Abstract:

The number of cases of fraud, forgery and cheating being recorded in the global higher education market has grown rapidly, according to a report produced by the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education. Figures unearthed by the report show that the number of fake universities around the world grew to 800 in 2004, vs 200 in 2000, that there are an estimated 10,000 holders of fake US degrees in Malaysia, and that fake degrees are on sale from at least 40 sources in Australia.

Article Abstract:

Proposals by the Conservatives' National Policy Group on Higher Education included widening participation with students bearing a greater proportion of the costs of higher education. Other proposals include the introduction of a national higher education academic credit transfer scheme established by the Higher Education Quality Council. It also recommends that student maintenance funding should come from the private sector in the form of a capitalised repayable loan.

Watchdog warns of Ucas form fraud rise

Article Abstract:

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service's (Ucas) verification unit has seen the number of 'suspect' applications detected almost triple in 2005, vs 2004, and the number of applications cancelled due to missing or forged documents has risen almost 50 percent. A total of 1,136 applications were cancelled in 2005, vs 758 applications in 2004, and almost the same number were considered too suspect to be processed.
