Article Abstract:

A review of the level of research into biomedicine among different countries found the output of the East Asian nations was increasing rapidly. The largest number of papers were produced by the US, with the lowest number coming from Estonia. Although the number of papers from the US had fallen from a 42.6% share of the world output to 39.5%. Biomedicine accounted for 63% of all science papers produced in Sweden compared to 11% in the Ukraine. Many papers were written by scientists working together, they were often published in the English language. Some 48 nations were studied in 1993-98.

Cooperate to contend

Article Abstract:

European Union countries are examining ways to attract and retain researchers and compete with the United States in science and technology. Cooperation may be one way to create a knowledge-driven economy, and the European Research Board has been set up to address the issues of research collaboration across the EU.

Article Abstract:

American University has fostered links between nations in conflict by what is termed "academic diplomacy". Academics from these countries work together on some joint study and in so doing break down prejudices.
