Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the latest government white paper on higher education in the UK are examined from the point of view that just because you work in an university does not necessarily mean that you have any idea about what is going on in higher education. It is argued that the government is one of the main challenges that universities face today and that the attempts by the government in the white paper to bring universities and business together are doomed to failure as a result of the mess that business makes of everything.

Issues relating to the contention that the "new" Labour Party in the United Kingdom is in danger of losing sight of what is true and valuable in its rush to cosy up to corporate culture - as demonstrated by statements made by Charles Clarke, secretary of state for education, regarding the place of universities in society. It is argued that what Clarke wants universities to do is produce citizens who merely "benefit the economy", rather than citizens who are critical, and who take part in a growing inequality in society.

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the state of the universities in the United Kingdom are examined. It is argued that the policies of current Labour government in the UK appear to be designed to increase the gap between old and new universities, rather than close it, effectively taking money out of the pocket of the poorer establishments in order to finance the so-called "research elite".
