Article Abstract:
The Commonwealth of Nations will hold a meeting involving some 50 heads of sate, in Limassol, Cyprus, autumn 1993, and issues such as education will be discussed, supplementing the meeting of the Association of Commonwealth Universities in Swansea in August 1993. The Commonwealth benefits from a pragmatic approach, a variety of cultures and countries at different stages of development. Information and experience is shared, and support schemes include bilateral assistance in educational awards. Work is proceeding on developing shared resources, allowing access to a rich pool of knowledge.

F R Leavis always saw himself as a literary critic not an academic, although he taught at the newly-founded Cambridge University English faculty. With two friends he started the literary magazine 'Scrutiny' which became influential in the literary field. Leavis worked in poetry, drama and fiction criticism, and championed writers such as Austen, Dickens, Conrad and D H Lawrence. Lawrence was a particular favourite, as was Henry James.

The trend for information technology firms to outsource services to India owes much to Indians' strong English and communication skills. Some 350 mil Indians use English every day and there is high demand for English skills.
