Article Abstract:
Research would benefit from the creation of autonomous research centres and institutions in British universities, there being no compelling evidence to support the academic belief that research and teaching are mutually supportive. Research has become an extremely competitive business in which it will be difficult for universities to succeed if their research is carried out by staff on short-term contracts led by part-time bosses frequently lacking in management expertise. Academics wanting to combine research with teaching could contract some of their time to a research centre.
