Academe risks losing talent

Article Abstract:

The Foundation for Science and Technology warns universities in 2007 that they risk losing the best among young British research talent to industry and overseas unless they offer more support to postdoctoral researchers. It is suggested that researchers must be given appropriate degrees of responsibility and recognition in their early careers as well as advice on opportunities outside academe.

Metrics hit stone wall

Article Abstract:

Research-led universities are set to shun government proposals to replace the existing peer review led research assessment exercise (RAE) with a metrics-based system. The Russell Group and 1994 Group have concerns about metrics as proposed in the Next Step document from the government and the recent RAE consultation.

Poll finds 81% pan switch to metrics

Article Abstract:

The University and College Union (UCU) has conducted a survey which found that 81 percent of academics reject the government's proposed metrics-based system for measuring research quality. Most vice-chancellors have also rejected the proposals.
