Article Abstract:

Malcolm Payne justifies his decision to step down from his position as head of the sociology department of Manchester Metropolitan University after 14 years and join St Christopher's Hospice in London, England. Payne believes that in a field such as sociology, it is not possible to teach or administer teaching for too long a period of time without some form of practical involvement.

An overview of the Catholic Church's decision to "cease to maintain" Plater College, Oxford, and the college's subsequent closure. The reasons given by the church for the closure of the college, which was founded in 1921, include the alleged inability to ensure that acceptably high standards of education could be maintained and a failure to retain students.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council, and the Medical Research Council have put together the UK National Collaboration on Ageing Research which will look at the challenges facing the country regarding this topic.
