A wine for each occasion

Article Abstract:

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has to address quality in UK universities. However, educationalists are struggling with the relative importance of branding, standards and standing within this concept. The QAA is focusing on subject benchmarking groups to designate standards but has introduced the issue of standing in its consideration of group members. The universities of Oxford and Cambridge are the only institutions which are internationally recognized brands but it would be ludicrous to link all universities with these brands and a disservice to students who have individual requirements.

Diversity and quality will thrive under light touch

Article Abstract:

The quality of teaching in UK universities must be monitored to maintain standards, but quality assurance processes may ultimately impair teaching quality because of their excessive bureaucracy and procedural requirements. The same processes are applied to all institutions and courses despite their diversity throughout the UK. Teachers are under pressure to simultaneously focus on research, teaching and preparing papers for quality audits while their salaries are effectively declining. The assessment system should be selective and external review processes should be minimized.

Article Abstract:

The renowned psychiatric clinic, the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, KS, is discussed with emphasis on its work. The clinic was founded by Charles Menninger and his two sons and their innovative work including rehabilitation led to success.
