A waste of good ideas

Article Abstract:

The UK often fails to take advantage of new ideas but it is not due to a lack of enterprise from British academics. Research has shown companies formed from innovations developed at universities are started at about the same rate in both US and UK universities. But British businessmen and industrialists are not keen to spend money on developing new ideas. A study looking into the effectiveness of US universities compared to those in Scotland in exploiting research found the Scottish universities where particularly good at developing spin-off companies for less investment.

Shots in the dark; the transfer of ideas to the market

Article Abstract:

Until recently many UK universities have confined their commercial operations to letting student residences and lecture halls for conferences. Now universities are being tempted and pressed to commercialize intellectual property for profit. Some universities have set up private companies that tender for projects or do specific tasks for their industry, while others become involved in commercially developing research discoveries.

Article Abstract:

The outcome of the UK public spending review in summer 2000 for higher education is discussed, with focus on the effect of increased funding and the government objective to get more young people to go to college.
